The application of the project method in teaching French as a Foreign Language (FFL) in the first two grades of the public Greek junior high school

  • The present study examined the effect of the project method in teaching French as a Foreign Language (FFL) in the first two grades of a Greek public junior high school. The main idea of this cooperative method of differentiated and interdisciplinary pedagogy is that active students are motivated to construct their knowledge during the learning process. The project method draws attention on three types of objectives: cognitive, psychomotor and socio-emotional, which develop during learning, assisted by the teacher - “facilitator”. A literature search on the application of the Project method in teaching FFL for the period in between 1994-2003, revealed only theoretical and descriptive studies but not experimental ones. The reviewed articles, even though they provided positive indications in students’ outcomes in cognitive and socio-emotional domains, suffer from an objective evaluation. The present study addresses this dearth, which is to implicate the project method in a FFL class and to compare student outcomes to those taught with the traditional method. Thus, the purpose of the current study is to examine students’ general competence (oral and writing), their interest for the lesson in FFL as well as their socio-emotional development. The present empirical study used an experimental (n=120) and a control group (n=94), over a two year period, the first being the year of sensitization and the second the implication of the project method. Both quantitative (tests/questionnaires) and qualitative (interviews) data collection methods were employed. In order to further validate the results, the method of triangulation was applied. Results suggested a positive effect of the project method in the FFL group regarding the cognitive and socio-emotional domains. Students’ oral competence was statistically significantly improved, while in the case of writing competence there was an improvement but it was not statistically significant. Students’ interest for the lesson was also increased at a statistically significant level. Their social attitudes in the areas of the collaboration and creativity were also statistically significantly improved, while their responsibility and self-esteem remained unaltered. These results are in accordance with the project literature where there are contradictory evidence regarding the effect of project on cognitive outcomes. However all authors agree that the project method develops students’ motivation and attitudes. In the future, the application of an eclectic approach and the employment of Information Technology in the foreign languages classes, the increased need of differentiated pedagogy in multicultural heterogeneous classes, the recent principle of the Common European Frame Benchmarks for Languages, the “learning by doing”, as well as the concept of the “competences’ frame of reference” necessitate a reactivation of the project method. The results of this study are in support of this perspective.
